While working at a cafe in Gangnam District, a designer Ha Yong-Soo noticed him and persuaded him to model for a fashion magazine shoot. This opportunity led him to work full time as a fashion model for sometime.
Lee made his debut in the acting career in 1993 when he was cast in the TV drama ”Dinosaur Teacher”. A year later, Lee made his first appearance in a feature film ”The Young Man”.

In 2010, Lee starred in the film ”The Housemaid”. This thriller competed at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. In 2012, made an appearance in the heist thriller ”The Thieves”. During that time, the movie was the second most grossing movie to be produced in South Korean movie history.
In 2013, Lee acted as an undercover police officer in”New World” and Prince Suyang in ”The Face Reader”. With the film ”The Face Reader”, Lee won The Best supporting actor Baeksang Art Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards. In 2015, He featured in ”Assassination”. Lee later appeared in ”Operation Chromite”, where he portrayed a Soouth Korean captain in the Navy.
In 2017, Lee played in films such as Warriors of the Dawn, The Two Worlds, and Along with the Gods. In 2018, He was cast in ”The last 49 Days”. In 2019, he played the role of a political advisor in the drama ”Chief of Staff”.
In 2021, Lee starred in the hit series ”Squid Game”. This survival drama boosted him to be renown internationally. In Squid Game, Lee played the role of Seong Gi-Hun, a gambler who is persuaded to participate in a series of lethal challenges consisting of common kids games. This series was a major success worldwide and is the actor’s most famous role to date. With this role, Lee won the outstanding lead actor in a drama series in the Emmy Awards. He also won the outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series in the Screen Actors Guild.
On 26th February 2022, Lee signed with Creatives Artists Agency. In September 2022, he was signed as a lead in the TV series ”The Acolyte”. The same year, he made his debut as a director in ”Hunt” where he also starred and wrote the screenplay.
